The Other Woman

The Other Woman

If you’re here because you’ve challenged yourself to read along with me, to read the Bible from cover to cover, in 90 days, we’ve begun our first week! Jump on in anytime, please!

Day 3 of 90: Bible Reading Plan (Read Genesis 21-33)

If you weren’t here yesterday, I’ll catch you up: Sarah gave her servant girl to Abraham to conceive a child with. This child was called Ishmael. I don’t think Sarah believed that God would fulfill His promise to her. If you read today, you’ll know that Sarah did have a baby, that’s where we pick back up!

Abraham had a son with Hagar. Then years later, when they’ve both (Abraham and Sarah) grown so old and wrinkled with age, Sarah becomes pregnant! They named the baby; Isaac.

The Other Woman: Hagar

The other woman in this story has a role to play. Hagar was the woman given to Abraham, the woman that gave him his firstborn, but whenever Sarah has a baby – Hagar gets the boot. She was a slave – turned concubine. She had to lay with a man that had no intention of loving her; my heart has such a tenderness for her. I’m sure she was mistreated and the source of envy from Sarah, who had been the one to give her to him in the first place. Well now she is cast out into the wilderness and they nearly died, I mean they were in the blistering sun, with no food/drink, and she was sobbing; not wanting to watch this son of hers die.

I can’t imagine how desperate and abandoned she must have felt. But God sent help, exactly what she needed, and was abundantly faithful to this outcast. He opened up her eyes to show her this well and He promised that He’d make a great nation come from Ishmael even though it wouldn’t be the same as what would come from Isaac because Isaac would father God’s chosen people, but that, even though he would face hostility, He’d make a nation come from Him. Does He ever have to do that to you? Just hit you in the face with something to get you to open your eyes to see Him? No? Yeah, me either. Except, that’s a lie. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve missed seeing the Living Water in my presence because I was refusing to believe I could be helped; that things could change – oh boy, my disbelief. I wonder what kind of a fantastic relief that was to Hagar when her eyes met that well.

“You are the God who sees me.” Genesis 16:13

Abraham was going to be faithful and sacrifice Isaac; if you read the verses you’ll know a ram was caught in a thicket by his horns and Abraham took it and offered it up as a burnt offering to the Lord. He then called the place of the offering, “The Lord will provide.”

Isaac’s sons are named Esau and Jacob. When they were born Jacob was basically grabbing Esau’s heel trying to be the first to be born, he literally came out of his mom’s womb fighting. Then later on Jacob is a conniver. Jacob takes his brothers birth-right and blessing from his dad (Esau traded it for stew) who is old and blind by this time, and then he runs off. God still uses Jacob; not because of Jacob’s character, but because God is a good God, because keeps His promises.

“I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps. ” Genesis 32:10

Do you remember this? In Genesis 32:10 as Jacob prays out to God, reminding Him of His faithfulness and promises. That’s so important for me to do when I pray, to speak His word back to Him and remind Him of His promises.

Family sure is messy.
