Day 6 of 90: Bible Reading Plan (Read Exodus 12-18)

So we’re picking up after the plagues were sent down over Egypt and the plague of the firstborn, we have the Passover, and now Pharaoh has told Moses to get his people and leave.

God’s instructions to the Hebrews to remind their children to hold the Passover each year should serve as a reminder to us moms and dads to talk to our own kids about what God has done in our lives. We need to be intentional about sharing Him and reading His word and keeping those altars of remembrance to the Lord.

The blood of the Lamb was slain for you!

Indeed!

So they left and God told Moses He was going harden Pharaoh’s heart and he’d (Pharaoh) pursue them (the Israelite’s) and He (God) was going to get the glory for what happens, He tells them where to camp out, and Moses obeys. Then word gets back that the Israelite’s have fled . . . Pharaoh and his officials decide they made a mistake, they realize they’ve lost their workforce by letting go all those workers. They gather up several hundred chariots and pursue them. Then the Lord splits the Red Sea for the Israelite’s to walk through it on dry ground so they can escape the Egyptians.

Then the people ended up in the Desert of Sin, there they start grumbling against Moses and Aaron and are being pitiful; so God rains down bread (Manna) from heaven on them. Literally. Then they traveled from there and started complaining some more, because hey, why not? This time they were grumbling about wanting water and Moses cried out to God, so God told him to go to the rock at Horeb and strike it and he did, and water fell from it (he did this in the presence of the elders). He named the place Massah and Meribah.

Life in community . . . when we need help defeating the Amalekites in our lives; we need community!

There’s always been life in community: Jesus and His disciples, Paul and his inner circle, Adam and Eve, Noah and his family: life in community. The Bible gives one account after another about life in community. We were meant to do life in community. This is how, where, and when we thrive; we’re better together. We’re suppose to pray for each other (James 5:16; Ephesians 6:18), love each other (Ephesians 4:2-3), encourage each other (Hebrews 3:13), carry each others burdens (Galatians 6:2) , strengthen each other (1 Thessalonians 5:11), disciple (Titus 2:3) and etc (1 Corinthians 12:27). There are so many verses in God’s holy word instructing us to this.

In chapter 17 we find that the Amalekites came and attacked the Israelite’s at Rephidim and in retaliation Moses told Joshua to go out and charge them. So Moses, Aaron, and Hur went to the top of the hill overlooking the battlefield and when Moses held up his hands, holding the staff of God in his hands, the Israelite’s were succeeding in battle; but when he lowered it the Amalekites gained ground and began to win. So whenever he go tired, Aaron and Hur brought him a stone to sit on and stood on either side of him and held his arms up for him, thus Joshua and his army of men defeated the Amalekites. If Moses wouldn’t have had his brother and friend there, doing life with him, supporting him, he’d have lost the battle; they would have all lost the battle. We’re only as strong as our weakest link, really. We’re called to step up and be strong for each other and to hold each other up. Moses was weary and if he’d gone up there alone, trying to do it all by himself, he’d have failed. This is part of the importance of having a community to do life with. They were truly invested in each other, they truly cared about and for each other, and the nation of Israel; the nation of men and women and children; the people committed to being obedient to God.

Do you have people like this in your life? People that you share a similar passion with? Maybe a faith family? Maybe a very tight knit family? Maybe a group of people who you volunteer with? Anything like that? I have a really incredible faith family that I’ve been through more with than I could ever imagine, I’ve literally walked through the best and worst of my life with them, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. We literally do life together in community. We laugh together, cry together, pray together; we go to church together, have coffee dates together, go to the movies together, have family dinners together; we show up when the other is in need and clean each others houses and take each other meals and babysit each others children and run errands for each other and buy each other groceries or take each other to doctor appointments; we confess our sins to each other, we tell our dreams to each other, and we share our faith with each other. We go to funerals together and weddings together and baby showers together, we fight illness together and hurt when the other hurts and rejoice when the other rejoices. We stand by each other, hug, hold hands, and just sit with each other. We get to praise Jesus together.

We live life in community. Our hearts are for each other because they’re first for Him; for our love for Him and our obedience to Him. We aren’t a “faith family” simply because we go to the same church; no, that’s not the only reason we’re a tribe, it’s because we ARE the church. Our victory is in Christ and the community we surround ourselves with will determine what strength we have to help us power through when we can’t do it on our own; this is why He blessed us with soul mates called “community”.

“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
