Yom Kippur

Day 11 of 90: Bible Reading Plan (Read Leviticus 16-22)

You want to talk about it? I don’t like reading through the book of Leviticus with my daughters. I obviously read age appropriate books with my four year old but I find it hard to read through the all of the Bible with my oldest even though she can sit there and tell you about it. It makes me uncomfortable because I think it’s explicit; basically I tell my girlfriends I skip the Rated R stuff when the kiddo and I have to read – and if she continues to read through it, I honestly wish she’d stop. But she doesn’t and a lot of ‘that’ stuff she doesn’t get yet.

What? Yeah, I just called the Bible Rated R, go ahead and judge. I’ll wait.

There’s a lot of laws and regulations going on in Leviticus and there’s so much that I don’t really fully understand; I learn more every time I read the Bible. I’d really rather have nothing to do with Leviticus; it’s simply the last book in the Bible that I go to . . . errr, maybe second to last – to the book of Numbers. (Yes, because – numbers, it’s a word I don’t like, haha). This is a hard one for me, I just feel the book is so dry to read through, and I also understand that everyone has their own personal preferences (me, included), but I think I should work on getting more into the book of Leviticus; especially the stuff I don’t want to read through (like the offerings, that’s where I fall bored. What? Jesus already knows I said it, but okay, not bored – just disinterested.) Face it, many of us would rather read a book that sparked more interest or held our interest on a personal level while reading, than one that didn’t. That’s just our human condition. But did you know that a lot of times that the book of Leviticus was the first book that the Jewish children learned in the synagogues? Yep! It’s worth trying to spend more time in and I think when we’re done with this study I need to come back to it, because it’s on my heart. In fact, last year we had a Tent of Meeting at my church and I was so excited for it. I thought it was really neat.

If you have been reading along with us, then you’ve probably read about the day of atonement and you’re looking to finish strong tomorrow as we end our reading of Leviticus.

I have a loved one who is Jewish and celebrates Yom Kippur (I googled to see what the date is and it said it was from sunset October 8 to nightfall October 9 this year). He reads the book of Jonah and they do nothing else through the day, they do feast and fellowship, but they’re very strict to not work at all during Yom Kippur in his family and they recognize it as day of Sabbath.

So The Day Of Atonement (Yom Kippur) is a really big thing (it’s celebrated as like the biggest or most important thing) in the Jewish calendar. Back then, when Moses and Aaron were around, when there was the tabernacle, the high priest would make this special atonement sacrifice for the sins of Israel so that it’d bring reconciliation between them and God. But when Jesus completed His work on the cross, that big veil in the temple that hung between the ceiling and the floor was torn in two, and Christ had become the final atonement for sin; no other atoning sacrifice would ever be needed again. He paid it all.

“He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining] eternal redemption. ” Hebrews 9:12
