I’m at Day 15 of 90 of reading the Bible from cover to cover in 90 days . . . wow, we’re getting there! It doesn’t seem like we’ve covered much but then again it kind of feels like we should have gotten a lot further by now. Stay with me, we’re going to be covering a lot this week! If you’re following along we’ve just read Numbers 17-25 today.

Numbers isn’t one of my “go to” books of the Bible like Esther or James or Ruth or John or Psalms . . . those are obviously some of my favorites, but I do like the story of Balaam and have for years.

The Lord told Balaam he wasn’t to curse the nation. Balak, the son of Zippor (king of Moab), kept sending the princes to Balaam to ask for permission to go curse them, and so Balaam – in turn – is asking the Lord again for permission; which God ends up giving him permission to go to Balak. So on Balaam’s journey to Balak, his donkey is like . . . hold up, nope . . . don’t like that. This donkey is just not wanting to continue but being the persistent guy that Balaam is, he tries to persist so after a few tries the donkey and God’s angel start speaking to each other.

Shrek.

Yes, the movie Shrek. Every time I think of the story of Balaam I just giggle a little bit. Not because of the thought of a disobedient donkey humiliating his master or being beaten, or the thought of a sword-yielding angel, mostly just because I have the image of Shrek’s donkey in my head. As we continue to read tomorrow we’ll see more. I really don’t like Balaam, he’s not a cool dude, but I like this story.

Mostly I like this story because even when we go off on our way . . . God’s mighty to accomplish His will, in spite of us. I think the story of Balaam is a pretty good reminder: Don’t think God won’t do some pretty radical things to open our eyes.
