David, David, David

David, David, David

Day 28 out of 90 in our cover to cover reading in 90 days, we’re getting there. Our verses for the day covered a multitude of things as we read 2 Samuel 1-24. So let’s jump in. First of all David hears about Saul and Jonathan being killed (they died while at battle at Mount Gilboa). David laments over them, there is drama with Abner then he’s killed (Abner, that is), and then Ish-Bosheth is murdered. But then . . .

David becomes king! David, the man that God had hand picked and chosen for Israel to be king, was now finally king! When the elders had come to him at Hebron, he’d made a covenant with them before God and they’d anointed him (David) king over Israel.

He’s about to reel it in.

He conquers Jerusalem, defeats the Philistines and then him and an army of men ( a lot of dudes) went and got the ark of God from Judah and brought it to the city of David. Then the Lord makes a great promise to David; He promises David that He (himself) will establish a house for him (David). (vs. 7:11)

Wow.

David went on to have incredible victories over so many and then . . . Bathsheba. This whole messy story with David falling for Bathsheba, taking her as his own and getting her pregnant and then deciding to murder her husband to cover it up (the fact that she had become pregnant) is all a lot to take in.

There are a lot of feelings going on with this chapter but I think one of the saddest parts of the story is learning that she’s probably not going to get to watch this baby grow up. That hurts my heart, I’ve been there. I understand that pain. In fact, today I cried for my first child and I hadn’t done that in a long time. It felt good. I was just driving to the store and looked over at the cemetery and started crying. Now, I’ll also say that it’s a tender thing for me because the cemetery where she’s at is right across from the Wal-Mart & Walgreens where I shop, so I pass it multiple times a week, but my heart hurts. So reminding about the baby dying, that hurt my heart.

There’s definitely a lot of sin issues going on here.

But it’s such a beautiful story of God’s grace, too. Here’s the thing, sometimes (and by sometimes I mean, a lot of times) we like to judge people based on how they sin differently than us, but there’s nothing we can do to earn our way into heaven. This is a story about grace, we can’t give it if we don’t understand our need for it, so when people hurt us – it’s easy to be upset with them and not give them grace and forgive them and love them. We can’t earn our salvation Even though we’re called to. Even though God’s already forgiven us. Something one of my pastor’s just said recently was, “If God would forgive us then how dare we not forgive others!?” That’s something to think about, good stuff!

So if you’ve just made the biggest mistake of your life, guess what!? There’s good news for you! This isn’t the end for you, no matter what you’ve done or what has happened to you, this isn’t the end and this wasn’t a surprise to God! I’m so thankful that He knew every stupid thing I’d do and every mistake I’d make but chose to love my anyway; to pursue me still.
