Free Period At School

Free Period At School

This came up in my “Timehop” on Facebook so I’m sharing with you all, because it’s just as funny to me today!

I have to tell you all about the overwhelming disappointment my daughter experienced yesterday due to some pre-misconceptions she had about going into intermediate (the 5th-6th grade school) next year.

We hadn’t spoken to her yet about the new changes that will take place at this new school BUT apparently some of her friends have already heard from their parents about it that in turn filled her in!!!!!! So when she came home yesterday she was quite excited about having “free periods”, which if you remember for us in school were our elective classes though some may have referred to them as a “free period” ….. maybe some schools have free periods now, I never did.

She proceeded to ask which classes she had to take and I let her know that reading, math, social studies, language arts, and science were required. She wanted to know what “elective” classes were offered and I mentioned that I heard there should be art. P.E., vocal, Spanish, technology, and maybe others as well. She told me that she was thinking about P.E. or technology and I let her know anything she chooses is fine. I didn’t inquire as to what her other choice would be, obviously if you’re thinking one or the other but have to take two classes, well you’ve already picked your two classes. Right?

Not so fast.

Our conversation then followed:

Daughter: Mom, I can’t believe it! It’s going to be so cool to have free period!”

Me: I know! It’s fun to choose classes you really wanna be in!!

Daughter: Oh no, I’m just choosing one.

Me: Come again?

Daughter: Yeah, I’m not sure if I’m choosing PE or technology but the other class is just going to be my free period.

Me: Huh….

Daughter: ……. it’s going to be so cool to just get to hang out in the commons and see your friends and visit and stuff for a whole class period.

🙄

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Not even sister. I had to explain to her that some people refer to elective classes as free period because no, they weren’t going to give her an entire class period to hang out in the commons with her friends. Just because it’s an elective class doesn’t mean you get to elect to take a class or elect to have no class at all. 🙄

Fast forward to this school year and she enjoyed her LEAP and Choir class so much, and she got to meet with other students every other Wednesday at lunchtime for a student led Bible study. The year shaped up to be a pretty great one! I wonder what “free period” she’ll choose for this coming fall!? Haha!
