Count Your Blessings
Hey there! I’m so glad you’re here, sweet friend! We’re on Day 22 of 90 in our reading plan to make it through the Bible from cover to cover in 90 days! Today our reading verses are Joshua 11-24! Wow, so much going in this new promised land!
So yeah, remember yesterday how Joshua and the nation take all of these kings and the southern cities?! Well buckle up because they’re about to take the northern kingdoms! You can scroll through Joshua to see this huge list of the defeated kings. They were on a mission, friends. They were doing as they were suppose to, conquering the promised land. So then the Lord basically tells Joshua . . . who has grown old, by the way . . . “hey man, you’re pretty old and there’s a lot of area left to cover, dude”. The Lord instructs Joshua to divide the land among the tribes of Israel.
“You have done all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded, and you have obeyed me in everything I commanded. For a long time now—to this very day—you have not deserted your fellow Israelites but have carried out the mission the Lord your God gave you. Now that the Lord your God has given them rest as he promised, return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. 5 But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you: to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” Joshua 22:2-6
God gives Israel rest from their enemies and a long time has passed and Joshua has grown very, very old by now. He summoned together all of their
elders, leaders, judges and officials and He reminds them of what God has done for them, fighting for them (and He’s going to continue to fight for them) and He warns them to not worship other gods and to keep the law and be courageous and to love the Lord.
Again he took to the counsel and proclaimed the goodness of God and reminded the nation of what had been done for them, where they had come from and what they had been through.
“Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods!” Joshua 24:16
The people claimed they’re going to love the Lord, they swore they would. Then Joshua dismissed them, each to their own inheritance (Joshua 24:28), and then at the age of 110, Joshua was buried at his inheritance, in the promised land.
The Bible tell us, “choose this day for whom yourselves you will serve.” Wow. Wasn’t this just meant for me?
As my Pastor likes to say, “Can I just be real with ya’?” Well let me be real with you. I know that the Lord can use anything, any Word to give us a word – if you know what I mean, and this evening whenever I read that verse I thought . . . wow. I’m so sorry. I get it.
I get it.
I hear you, Lord.
Here’s the thing, today – and really, even this week – I haven’t been serving the Lord, I’ve been serving myself. I’ve been serving my anxiety and my own strengths. I know I feel this incredible peace that’s hard to explain because I know, someway, somehow, He IS going to lay this all out as it’s meant to be, how it needs to be, and in ways that my finite mind could never comprehend. But.
Oh yea, but.
But that unbelief tries to pull me close and show me where the light is so I can do it all by myself without His help.
Oh yea, but.
But . . . I still like to play “keep a way” from daddy. I like to try to take things out of His hands when He’s not working on my schedule, in my time line or time frame of when I think is reasonable or even acceptable. I like to try to “Help Him Out”. Oops. Yup, that’s me. I do it sometimes.
So yeah, I’ve been over here stressing most of the week. I’m feeling pretty terrible with these dizzy spells I’m having and it’s completely messing with me, plus I’m concerned about my mama and some stuff she’s got going on with a pending (major) surgery, and then all this with my daughter . . . have mercy! No insurance, no help with her formula, and now – tonight – she’s on the floor crying, “I need my pink medicine, I want my pink medicine, Please, mommy, please!” She’s been off her antibiotic for one week (tomorrow). It’s something she takes 3x a day, every day, and has for 2 1/2 years. It helps her to not vomit as badly by helping the gastroparesis which is one of her many health issues. My heart is breaking knowing she can’t get back on it until this next test at Children’s Hospital. So I’ve consistently went to the computer or my phone or my friends. My first thought IS to talk to God about it (and yes I’ve prayed a lot about this) but then every time between actually praying to Him, when I get a moment, I find myself getting (purposely) distracted or trying to “fix” things myself and I have been letting Him be an afterthought . . . because I know He’s going to be there and He’s not going anywhere.
Wow, I’m a selfish little kid sometimes, it seems!!!
This verse though . . . who will you choose to serve?
It doesn’t mean just a golden or bronze calf or statue somewhere . . . whatever you’re giving more attention and energy to than God is what you’re serving and right now mine is anxiety and worrisome thoughts.
I needed this heart check. I needed a reminder to count my blessings.
So girls (or guys, I know we have a few), check your heart and count your blessings tonight!
