King David

King David

Hey! If you’re new here, today we are on Day 26 of 90 in our efforts to read the Bible from cover to cover in 90 days! Stick around, I’m so glad that you’re here!

So we begin today with the story of David and Goliath! Woohoo! David and Goliath is probably one of the first stories that I was actually able to remember from the Bible. How about you? If not, go back and check it in today’s reading (it’s all posted at the bottom – the verses we read).

So Jonathan (Saul’s son) loves David with a deep abiding love, he recognizes David as God’s anointed, rightful king, and he makes a covenant with David. David defeats many enemies and Saul begins to truly fear David. Saul wants David dead! Saul told his son, Jonathan, and his servants to kill David so then Jonathan tells David, hey – my dad wants to kill you – be on your guard! Some stuff happens and things seem like they’re going to be cool between Saul and David but here comes the evil spirit and Saul is back to plotting David’s death so David flees. After David has left Saul ends up killing this priest and he pursues David but then . . . . DAVID spares Saul’s life! Saul and David have an oath; Saul concedes that David is the true, anointed king for Israel and makes sure David won’t wipe out Saul’s descendants and David agrees. Saul returns home and David goes to battle. Samuel died and princess Abigail becomes David’s wife, and David spares Saul’s life again when he tells Abisha that it’s a no-go when they come across Saul and soldiers in the camp just sleeping because David was in obedience, he understood it wasn’t his time, and that some day he’d rule, but right now King Saul was still the leader of the nation. Hey, power to you, but I’m not going to tell you that I’d have such integrity. I mean, can you imagine the restraint and love and submission and obedience that it would take to humble yourself and let that play out . . . to not murder Saul on the spot when he’d previously so earnestly sought to have you killed? Wow! He was good though, he recognized that it was his time, he wasn’t taking the easy way out.

Sometimes when things come our way, when we’re going to get something that we really want and we’re really excited about it, we jump on it just because the opportunity is there but that doesn’t mean it’s something that’s going to be good for us. Just because it is laying in front of us doesn’t mean it’s a blessing. Just because I desperately need money and find a bag full of it when I’m walking through the parking lot, that opportunity to get my way doesn’t mean it’s a blessing, it just means the opportunity to reach out and take what I want/need is there. There is a difference. We have to use discernment. I’d never pickup a bag of money and just walk off with it, I’ve never seen anything in my life that I wanted bad enough that I’d steal for it and all I’d think if I took someone’s stuff is – I basically stole it. I’d be searching for the rightful owners. Same thing here, when we have the opportunity for something and take it even though it’s not aligned with what God would have, it’s not a blessing for us, and quite possibly we could be robbing someone else of a robbing.
