Day 2 of 90: Bible Reading Plan(Read Genesis 2-20)

So much, so, so, so much going on. Be honest, did you read it? Any of it? No? I’m not even mad about it. Well let me fill you in for the things you may have missed just to catch you up. I enjoy skimming but this one is going to be a mother of emotions (pun intended) when we get Sarah and Hagar involved!

God promises Abraham that he’s going to bless his family, this a special covenant that he makes with him. It’s pretty incredible to think about and that God would think so much of any of us to do such a thing. But, wow, that’s just God and His goodness.***** God promises Abraham He is going to bless him and his family – that he’s going to have a ton of children, and that through that people will come to know God’s blessing. Abraham has (fathers) Isaac and then Isaac has Jacob; Jacob has 12 sons; and with each generation God renews His covenant (His promises to bless them and all nations through them) I don’t get it. *****God’s promise to bless the nations through Abraham? Could He have chosen a more imperfect family? Seriously, Abraham might as well be giving away this beautiful bride to whomever because he’s denying her as his bride on a few different occasions. Like, he needs to get out of here with all that nonsense. Abraham, what are you thinking pretending she’s not yours?

Then, Sarah, I don’t even want to deal with her and her choices right now. She’s the “fixer”. I’m one of those; when things aren’t going as quickly as you’d like them to so you try to “help” God along. God’s promised to give her a child but she’s waited long enough. So she gives, GIVES, Abraham her servant girl to sleep with so that he can have a child because she’s grown impatient and of course you know that family was totally dysfunctional after that point. It’s been so many years, decades, ago I can’t possibly remember the first time I read this story but I remember the emotions I had somewhat. Being so angry with her and thinking how could you ever do that! Then as I struggled with infertility over the years and the terrible heartbreak that brought, I understood the desperation must have been incredible, and that her pain was simply unbearable. I’m sure that whenever Hagar was with Abraham that Sarah felt alone and abandoned. It makes me think of the most popular songs and cards, the most popular quotes, all stating things like, “Follow your heart”, “You need only follow your heart”, and “Just do what your heart says”. A personal favorite, “The heart don’t lie”. These are some terrible “truths” we’ve been groomed into believing from the time of innocence: we have tomorrow & we should follow our hearts. But we’re not promised tomorrow & the heart is deceitful. These aren’t really truths at all, they’re lies! LIES! I may have never thrown another woman in my husbands lap but I’m certainly guilty of wanting to swing the pendulum to put things back in “my control” and help to hurry God along and get things done on my own timeline. When we step out from under the umbrella of protection from God’s will for our lives . . . when we doubt God, when we choose fear over faith, we let the enemy have a foothold over our lives. The enemy comes to steal, kill, and destroy; we’ll be robbed of our sound mind, peace, hope, joy, and faith if we don’t trust in Him (God). Have you ever done this? In your rush to get the fulfillment of God’s promise, or get the answer to a prayer, you’ve tried to make your own way when there seemed to be no rational way instead of letting it be Yahweh . . . God’s way. God always keeps His word to us, even if we feel desperate and doubt; He’s unchanging, in His word He tells us this.
